Maximum allowable operating pressure, or MAOP, is the highest pressure a gas system component or section is designed to withstand and still operate safely. It is vitally important not to exceed MAOP as this can lead to equipment damage, leaks, and dangerous incidents.
Each component and section of the gas delivery system is designed and operated based on this concept. The maximum pressure for a component is determined by its design and characteristics, and it is verified by testing. The component with the lowest MAOP determines the maximum pressure for an entire section of the gas system.
