The meter loop is the electrical equipment in an overhead service arrangement that runs vertically down the side of the building between the service drop and the meter. A meter loop comprises several different components all connected and installed to function together. The weatherhead is the small cap at the top of the meter loop that keeps rain and other moisture from running down the vertical service mast. The service mast (also known as a service riser) is the pipe that runs through the roof and down the side of the building and encloses the service conductors to protect them from damage. The meter base (also known as a meter can) is installed at the bottom of the service mast to house and protect the revenue meter.
There is no industry standard concerning ownership of the meter loop, and this varies by state and sometimes even within a state. In some areas the power supplier owns the meter loop and is responsible for its maintenance. In other areas it is customer-owned and maintained.
