TVA is a corporation owned by the United States government. TVA provides wholesale electricity in seven southern states as well as services such as flood control, navigation, economic development assistance, and land management for the Tennessee River system. TVA owns coal, natural gas, hydro, nuclear, and renewable power plants and also purchases renewable energy from project owners. It sells most of its power output to municipal utilities and co-ops, but it also serves large industrial customers and government facilities directly as a retail provider and sells excess wholesale power into regional power markets.
